What is a shopping cart?
Shopping carts can vary greatly, from fairly simple to extremely complex. They provide quick ways of logging requests for items and rather than purchasing one item before purchasing another, they allow all requested items to be gathered in a virtual shopping basket which can be paid for at the same time.

This example from an online pet shop designed, in conjunction with Rob Butler, of Matrix23. It was one of the more complex projects undertaken by the practice as it also includes a content management system.

It's administration section was very demanding due to the requirement for each item to have the option to add choices (like size, colour, material etc) to each item. Likewise these choices could have prices allocated to them. These prices for the choices needed to override the default price for that item. Also the price needed to be displayed differently for members and non-members and price-overriding choices needed to be displayed differently to non-price-overriding-choices.
